The Company
Kimia Analytics is formed by a team of scientists with strong backgrounds in mass spectrometry, plasma sciences, analytical chemistry, and thermofluids. This combination has enabled the development of the first ever compact, transportable Inductively Coupled Plasma Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer (ICP-3Q-MS).
This enabling technology is made possible due to a number of breakthroughs in this area. A new generation of ICP torch as ion source—developed by a highly-achieved team of scientists from the University of Toronto (U of T)—in combination with the first ever patented air-cooled ion sampling interface developed by Kimia’s technical staff have provided a tangible opportunity in the elemental analysis market. Establishing a key alliance with QuadroCore, a company with strong capabilities in miniaturized triple-quad mass spectrometers, has provided a concrete foundation for Kimia to address a major market need for real-time, rapid, ultra-sensitive elemental analysis technologies.
The Team
Sina Alavi, Ph.D.
Co-Founder, Chief Executive Officer
Sina obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto where he developed the new generation of plasma torch for atomic spectrometry. He also co-founded the Micro/Nanofluidics Lab during his M.Sc. studies in the Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran, for which he was selected researcher of the year. He has coauthored more than 25 scientific articles in prestigious journals and developed more than 10 patented and innovative technologies in the fields of atomic spectrometry, themofluids, plasma sciences, and microfluidics. With a true passion for developing new technologies and a track record of turning innovative ideas into reality, Sina will lead Kimia into the future to become the first manufacturer of portable, affordable ICP-3Q-MS instruments.
Reza Javahery, Ph.D.
Co-Founder, Chief Operating Officer
Reza is a pioneer in development and production of highly innovative mass spectrometers and other scientific instrumentation. As a seasoned executive with over 30 years of experience in research and development, Reza has co-founded companies, published more than 50 scientific articles, and is an inventor of over 50 patents and proprietary technology. He brings with him industry experience from SCIEX and PerkinElmer where he worked as the Director of Research and Development of Mass Spectrometry. Before PerkinElmer Reza founded Ionics, designing and commercializing top of the line Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometers, which was acquired and introduced by PerkinElmer in 2015.
Kaveh Kahen, Ph.D.
Co-Founder, Advisor
Dr. Kaveh Kahen is currently the CEO of the Advion group and Sigma Analytical Services. Dr. Kahen has more than 20 years of global experience delivering profitable growth in highly competitive life sciences, analytical testing, and analytical instrumentation markets. Prior to joining Advion, Dr. Kahen held various R&D and business leadership positions at AB SCIEX, PerkinElmer, and more recently as the co-founder and CEO of Sigma Analytical Services, Canada’s premier medical cannabis testing and consulting company. Dr. Kahen received his Ph.D. in the field of analytical chemistry from The George Washington University. He then joined AB SCIEX and was responsible for design and development of novel technologies and instrument platforms including the NexION™ 300 ICP-MS, which was acquired and introduced by PerkinElmer in 2010. At PerkinElmer, he became the head of Global R&D, managing early stage innovation projects for all analytical platforms. Subsequently, Dr. Kahen was appointed as the Global General Manager of the Mass Spectrometry business unit where he was responsible for several successful M&As and the introduction of new LC-MS/MS and ICP-MS platforms and the company’s successful entry into the Chinese mass spectrometry market.
Javad Mostaghimi, Ph.D.
Co-Founder, Advisor
Dr. Javad Mostaghimi is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto and the director of the Centre for Advanced Coating Technologies (CACT). He received his B.Sc. degree from Sharif University, Iran, in 1974, and M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1978 and 1982. Before joining the University of Toronto in 1990, he held positions at Pratt & Whitney Canada and the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Sherbrooke.
His main research interests are the study of thermal spray coatings, including superhydrophobic coatings, thermal barriers, corrosion and wear resistant coatings. He has performed comprehensive studies on the flow, temperature, and electromagnetic fields within arcs and RF inductively coupled plasmas and contributed to the design of novel DC and RF plasma torches. He is among the top 2% most-cited researchers in the world.
Professor Mostaghimi is a fellow of the following professional societies: RSC, ASME, ASM, CSME, EIC, CAE, AAAS, IUPAC, and the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Tokyo. He is a member of the Qingdao International Academician Park. He is a recipient of the 75th Anniversary Medal of the ASME Heat Transfer Division, 2013 Robert W. Angus Medal of the CSME, 2012 Heat Transfer Memorial Award of the ASME, 2011 Jules Stachiewicz Medal of the CSME, 2010 NSERC Brockhouse Canada Prize and the 2009 Engineering Medal in R&D from the Professional Engineers of Ontario. In May 2019, Dr. Mostaghimi was inducted into the ASM Thermal Spray Hall of Fame. He is a member of the editorial board of Plasma Chemistry and Plasma Processing and a member of the International Review Board of the Journal of Thermal Spray.
