APPLICATION SCIENTIST – ICP-MS
Position Overview:
The Application Scientist will provide a scientific foundation to Kimia’s ICP-MS product line by developing a sound understanding of customer needs and developing applications and performing sample preparation activities in the key disciplines of: Environmental monitoring and analysis (Water, Soil, Geology), and Clinical applications.
The incumbent will generate data for application notes and technical literature and will communicate product operation and sample preparation techniques to customers through demonstrations, training courses, and formal presentations.
The incumbent will also contribute to commercial operations for the ICP-MS product, helping identify new applications and markets, assisting with Marketing Communication activities and supporting the sales process.
Up to 33% overnight travel may be required, working onsite with customers. Occasional international travel if needed (<10%).
Principal Responsibilities:
- Develop effective analytical methodology for the analysis of elements via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in various matrices.
- Generate new data by working with Kimia colleagues and customers in our key application areas. Data will take the form of application notes, publications in peer reviewed journals and/or slides for oral and poster presentations at conferences.
- Work closely with the research and engineering group to develop and test new products.
- Interact with customers and markets to define new applications and open new markets.
- Interact with Marketing Communications to help develop effective marketing strategies and campaigns.
- Interact with prospective customers to support the sales process.
- Provide onsite and telephone support and problem solving for customers experiencing sample preparation and analysis difficulties.
- Provide onsite customer training and applications assistance as part of Kimia’s initiative for post installation, application-specific training.
- Conduct on- and off-site demonstrations of the company’s products to potential customers in support of Kimia’s sales and marketing efforts.
- Interact with customers by phone or by laboratory visits to establish analysis needs, analyze customer samples, and provide reports to customers to support the sales process.
- Provide training classes for customers at Kimia’s facilities.

MEASURES OF EFFECTIVENESS:

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- PhD degree in analytical chemistry, environmental sciences, food sciences or toxicology. Other degree with demonstrated experience will be considered. Post-Doctoral training is a plus.
- Must possess in-depth knowledge and expertise of modern inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and related sample preparation techniques (e.g., microwave digester), preferably with experience in environmental chemistry, geology, food science/toxicology, or clinical applications.
- A demonstrated background of hardware skills and ability to troubleshoot scientific instruments as well as excellent communication and people skills is required.
- Three or more years of experience of application development, R&D, or other hands-on laboratory work with ICP-MS is desirable.

MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER
Position Overview:
Kimia Analytics is a high-growth company with a goal to revolutionize the field of elemental analysis by developing the first ever compact, portable Inductively Coupled Plasma Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer (ICP-3Q-MS).
We are looking for an enthusiastic, talented, detail-oriented mechanical design engineer to join our engineering team. As the design engineer, you will be responsible for carrying out a variety of engineering duties including designing, researching, prototyping, and quality assurance of the prototypes. You will get a chance to be part of the design and development of state-of-the-art instrument which will expose you to several advanced technologies. The chosen engineer will collaborate with the R&D and production teams on various design projects using in-depth knowledge of mechanical, thermodynamic, electrical, and material sciences and engineering software. In addition to being a good communicator, the candidate should be a creative thinker with excellent problem-solving skills.
Principal Responsibilities:
The duties include, but are not limited to:
- Conceptualize and evaluate mechanical and electrical systems in collaboration with other engineers and scientists.
- Apply mechanical, thermodynamic, electrical, and material science principles to achieve the desired functionality.
- Use CAD software (SolidWorks) to design and model various parts and assemblies according to requirements.
- Produce technical drawings for both parts and assemblies for manufacturing and production.
- Source new vendors to produce general and specialized components in addition to vendor management. Estimate cost limits and budgets for new designs.
- Fabricate and assemble test prototypes and ensure they pass all outlined criteria and quality control.
- Perform testing and quality assurance on fabricated and third-party components and modify designs as necessary to bring them to safety, performance and efficiency standards.
- Assist the senior engineer(s)/scientist(s) with design and development of new Mass Spectrometers.
- Involvement in continuous improvement of design and functionality.
- Keeping abreast of the latest advancements in technology, design trends, and engineering best practices.
- Attend weekly team meetings to provide progress reports and strategize on steps for the following week.
Organizational Relationships:
Reports to the Chief Technology Officer or his/her assignee.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, industrial design, applied science, or related engineering field
- Attentive to detail and critically minded. Ability to multitask and manage time effectively.
- A minimum of five (3) years of experience using SolidWorks.
- Good understanding of manufacturing drawings, experience in implementation and understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Have a basic knowledge of manufacturing processes (welding, machining processes, sheet metal, …)
- Hands-on skills and proficiency with hand/power tools is a must.
- Sound knowledge of design and engineering principles and best practices.
- Fluent oral and written English.
- Proficiency with other CAD software, MATLAB, CFD/Finite Element software, or other engineering programs is a plus.
